Somany Ceramics & Mits Champion Sustainable Design Through Tile Recycling Initiative
A combination of sustainability and creativity occurred with Somany Ceramics Ltd., a pioneer in ceramic and tile, who engaged with the Madhav Institute of Technology & Science (MITS) on a project titled: “Transforming Broken Tiles to Trendy Style.” This project prospectively considered architectural waste as a vehicle for creativity to advance sustainability in design education.
In total, 17 architecture students collaborated with Somany Ceramics Ltd. and the project engaged the students to repurpose abandoned tiles using their creativity and design knowledge into wall murals and installations. Throughout the process of creation and design they exhibited a strong sense of aesthetics and environmental responsibility – two powerful concepts for design in architecture that demonstrate how sustainability can drive creative design.
Anshuman Chakravarty, Head of Marketing at Somany Ceramics, lauded the initiative, noting:
“It’s inspiring to witness such strong commitment to recycling and sustainability from the next generation of architects. “Sustainability is integral to our innovation at Somany Ceramics, our tile adhesives are produced using recycled waste tiles and we also think it’s our responsibility to create awareness around construction waste reduction and responsible future practices.”
Dr. Anjali S. Patil, Head of Department MITS reiterated the project as an educational experience:
“This partnership provided our students with a wonderful opportunity to apply sustainable design principles to a real-world project. This was not merely an art installation but a practical lesson in ecological responsibility.”
In accord, Pranshi Jain, Assistant Professor at MITS stated:
“This was an extraordinarily innovative initiative from Somany Ceramics. It was both rewarding and highly inspiring for everyone involved.”
This collaboration was an exemplary case study of how academia and industry can collaborate in a significant way to advance an eco-sustainable design paradigm. This initiative aligns environmental principles with architectural education to aid in achieving a sustainable yet imaginative future in design.
