Resilient Roofing Elevates Sustainable Living In St Andrews Development
The St Andrews West Phase 2 project in Scotland is responsible for one of the first sustainable urban housing developments, with environmentally sound and architecturally functional high-performance roofing in the St Andrews West Phase 2 development. The project, which includes 16 houses, 8 ‘Fisher Flats’, and 38 apartments, utilized the Carlisle RESITRIX bitumen-backed EPDM membrane system as the waterproofing system on the project due to the long-term durability of the roofing system and the ability to withstand all weather systems as recommended by Site Roofing.
The RESITRIX system was designed specifically for St Andrews’ coastal climate and offers an unbelievably durable, sustainable, and beneficial solution that exceeds a 50-year system lifespan. St Andrews’ environment exposes the structure and without fail, RESITRIX has the most resistance against full exposure to ultraviolet rays, extreme hot and cold temperatures, and saline environments, which allowed it to be an ideal system for coastal architecture. The self-adhesive backing and hot air-welded seams were perfect in making the installation time faster and safely adhere the seams while limiting the disturbance to the environment around the construction site.
A key architectural advantage of the system is its walkable surface, which provided safe, uninterrupted access to flat roof areas throughout the build. This was critical in coordinating work across a complex program featuring flat and pitched roofs and allowing for maximum collaboration between Site Roofing and other contractors on site.
St Andrews West embodies the practice of making conscious material choices to further sustainable goals, improve construction efficiencies, and enhance the longevity of the built environment. RESITRIX wraps the St Andrews West project as an example of resilient and future-minded roofing in today’s residential design.
