Govt announces detailed plan for newly proposed Sir J J School of Art, Architecture and Design
According to the UGC website, ‘De-novo Institution’ means an institution devoted to innovations in teaching and research in unique and ’emerging areas of knowledge’, so determined by eminent peers of the academic community in the concerned disciplines.
After the state government approved a plan to establish a deemed-to-be-university under the de-novo category by bringing together three iconic institutions in the city — Sir J J School of Art, Sir J J College of Applied Arts and Sir J J College of Architecture — it will be renamed as Sir J J School of Art, Architecture and Design.
After the cabinet approval last week, the government has declared a detailed plan for the first-of-its-kind institution in Maharashtra which will focus on offering innovative courses in Art, Architecture and Design.
The Higher and Technical Education department issued a Government Resolution, detailing out the plan for the first state company-sponsored deemed-to-be-university under de-novo category. Fulfilling the requirement of the specialised category of deemed-to-be-university, this institution will offer seven innovative courses in Art, Architecture and Design, the first-of-its-kind in India.
As per the information provided in the GR, these new post-graduation courses will be – Contemporary Art Practices, Metropolitan Architecture, Communication and Experience Design, Typography and Type Design, Art Education, Architecture Education and Design Education, apart from conventional under-graduation courses in Art, Architecture and Design. Accordingly, five new departments will be set-up. To house these departments, infrastructural rearrangements will be made on the existing campus of the colleges which is located near the CSMT railway station.
As this will be a state-company sponsored standalone institution, it will be receiving financial assistance from the state government. The GR also mentions approval to the annual anticipated expenditure of Rs 50,37,90,866 toward salary of teaching and non-teaching staff of the newly proposed deemed-to-be university under the de-novo category.
An official from the department explained, “After the initial proposal was submitted to the University Grants Commission (UGC), it was asked to fulfil a few conditions to be recognised under de-novo category. This included a new name, a separate and dedicated Society/Trust/Company in the new name in accordance with the UGC (Institutions Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2019, transferring of all assets in the new name, detailed syllabi for the courses proposed in emerging areas among all. The GR acknowledges fulfilment of all the criteria and now a letter will be sent to the UGC by the state government to notify the Sir J J School of Art, Architecture and Design as deemed-to-be-university under de-novo category.
